YYC Flooding

Unless you’ve been living under a rock or don’t bother looking at the news, you’re aware of the flooding in central and southern Alberta. Since I live in Calgary, I’ll pick on Calgary, I’m more interested in the events in Calgary, but that should not be taken as an idication that the people outside Calgary who have been affected are not just as important.

I’ve lived in Calgary for sixteen years and in the area for quite a few years before that. In all that time, I’ve seen a few flooding events, but nothing even remotely as significant as this one. This is the first time I can recall city hall being shut down or any significant portion of the downtown core being evacuated. Pretty much all the bridges over the Bow and Elbow rivers are (or have been) closed and there is localized flooding in low spots around the city. You know it’s bad when CNN has a link to the story from their home page and that is exactly the situation. This is not the reason you ever want to be noticed on internation news.

Yet again, the natural world proves just how powerful it is and how impotent we are in the face of its might. That ordinarily simple, unassuming water ways can rear up and smack us down so suddenly is simpy awe inspiring.

If you’re one of the people affected by the flooding, my heart goes out to you.

  1. I’m glad to hear that you haven’t been directly affected by the recent flooding events. Despite having internet access I happen to be one of those “Under-a-rock” dweller and only learned about the flooding yesterday. (Someone on the OpenBSD mailing lists inquiring on the status of the OpenBSD servers is actually how I found out.)

    Take care and stay dry.
